It has been quite the journey since I first stepped into the world of online communities. Back then, being involved in one felt like standing on the front lines of a revolution — forums, mailing lists, early social platforms, all of it improvised.
The landscape has changed dramatically. Content evolved from text and images to immersive video and live streams. Community building had to keep pace with new formats and much higher expectations about speed and authenticity.
What has not changed
- —People join for the topic and stay for the people.
- —A small number of members create most of the value — protect them.
- —Moderation is product design, not policing.
- —Nothing scales a community faster than genuinely listening in public.
The tools will keep changing. The reason people gather has not moved an inch.
